Safer, smoother, and more sustainable traffic with customized traffic technology
What is Mobilidata?
Strong mobility ensures economic and social stability and stimulates growth. However, in densely populated Flanders, urbanization is increasing and the traffic infrastructure cannot keep up. As a result, we are all getting stuck in traffic more and more often. Fortunately, the knowledge and technology to generate, manage and share smart data is increasing rapidly. This enables us to make our traffic safer and more efficient: by cleverly organizing data from governments, market players and road users and sharing real-time, relevant information with each other. In this way, we strive for increased road safety, time savings, stress reduction, efficient communication and better air quality.
Within the Mobilidata program, governments, companies, and researchers work together to bring innovative technological traffic solutions to road users. These result in many benefits such as better travel directions, traffic alerts tailoredto your route and lights turning green quicker at intelligent traffic lights. All of this is done in accordance with the applicable privacy regulations. Watch the video to learn more about what high-quality mobility data can do for you.
Traffic solutions
To make traffic safer, smoother, more sustainable, and more comfortable for all road users, Mobilidata developed innovative, technological traffic solutions. In consultation with various researchers and developers, Mobilidata defined 5 major categories comprising 31 traffic solutions.
Data collection and sharing forms the basis for two-way communication between intelligent road infrastructure and road users. In the course of 2023 and 2024, road users in Flanders will gradually be able to start using all applications.
Research
In addition to the rollout of traffic solutions, the Mobilidata program also provides space for research into traffic solutions that do not yet exist or are not yet ready for market, but will add value to our society in the foreseeable future:
- Accommodating cycling groups
- Supporting vulnerable (groups of) road users such as the blind and visually impaired
- Encouraging modal shift among commuters
Who is Mobilidata?
Mobilidata is a program of the Flemish government supported by imec. The program receives financial support from VLAIO and additional support from the European Union through the Connecting Europe Facility program (CEF). Several other Flemish government institutions put their weight behind this program: MOW, AWV, EWI and VLAIO.
In addition, the program is realizing innovative traffic solutions in cooperation with private partners, based on digital infrastructure, intelligent traffic lights and high-quality sustainable data sources. With these, policymakers, businesses, governments, residents, and app developers can start making traffic safer, smoother, more sustainable and more comfortable for every road user.
